Mechanical grinding of tree stumps several inches below grade so you can replant, build, mow, or just be rid of the trip hazard — without the cost and disturbance of digging the root ball out.
After a tree comes down, the stump is what's left in your way. Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump and major surface roots down to several inches below grade, turning a stubborn obstacle into a pile of grindings you can use as mulch or remove. It's faster, cheaper, and far less destructive than excavating the whole root ball.
Grinding below grade lets you replant grass or beds, pour over the spot, or run a mower across it without catching. The depth matters: 4–6 inches under grade is fine for lawn, while a foundation, paving, or a new tree may call for going deeper to clear the root crown. Hardwoods, big-diameter stumps, and rocky soil all slow the cut.
Stump work pairs naturally with every tree that gets removed during clearing, defensible-space, or driveway projects — which is why it's often bundled. A single operator can typically knock out 6–12 stumps in a day depending on size and access.
How It Works
The Stump Removal process
- 1
Measure & quote
Stumps are measured across the widest point; pricing typically runs $2–$5 per inch of diameter, with a minimum around $100.
- 2
Clear & locate
The operator clears rocks and debris and checks for irrigation, utilities, and lines before the wheel touches wood.
- 3
Grind below grade
The grinder reduces the stump and surface roots to 4–6+ inches below grade depending on your end use.
- 4
Backfill or mulch
Grindings are raked back to fill the hole or hauled per your preference, leaving the spot ready to replant or build.

FAQ
Stump Removal questions, answered
How much does stump grinding cost?+
Most jobs price at $2–$5 per inch of stump diameter, with a typical job landing around $272 and a minimum charge near $100. Some operators bill hourly at $100–$150. A cluster of stumps in one visit is cheaper per stump than calling someone back out for one.
How deep do you grind?+
Standard is 4–6 inches below grade, which is plenty for lawn or beds. If you're planning to build, pave, or plant a new tree in the same spot, we go deeper to clear the root crown. Tell us the end use and we'll set the depth accordingly.
What about the roots — do you remove those too?+
Grinding handles the stump and the major surface roots radiating from it. The deeper lateral roots are left to decompose naturally, which is fine for almost every use. Full root excavation is rarely necessary and much more expensive and disruptive.
What do you do with the grindings?+
By default we rake the wood chips back into the hole as mulch, which fills the void as it settles. If you'd rather have a clean, plantable surface we can haul the grindings off or supplement with topsoil — just let us know.
How many stumps can you do in a day?+
A single operator typically grinds 6–12 stumps a day, depending heavily on diameter, hardness, and access. Big hardwood stumps or tight, rocky spots take longer; a row of small stumps goes quickly.
